The "Shield of the Trinity" Diagram

[Shield of the Trinity Diagram English]

This traditional diagram (dating back to the Christian iconography or symbolism of the early 13th century AD) provides a compact convenient visual summary of the first half of the Athanasian creed, expressing certain aspects of the orthodox Christian doctrine of the Trinity as six non-contradictory logical propositions within a non-transitive logic. (With a non-transitive quasi-equivalence relation, "A is equivalent to C" does not follow from the two statements "A is equivalent to B" and "B is equivalent to C".) So this roughly 800-year-old diagram contains an implicit anticipation of some aspects of modern studies of alternative logical systems.

I have color-coded the diagram below so that a red link means non-predication (non-equivalence) and a link with black text indicates predication (equivalence). Quasi-equivalence is still logically symmmetrical (though not transitive), so that all links are inherently bidirectional (two-way).

Click on the small PNG thumbnail of the original Latin version of the diagram below to view a larger GIF version, which includes side-by-side English-language translations of the Latin captions, and a list of the six non-contradictory logical assertions contained in the diagram (accompanied by decorative trinitarian motifs); or view the corresponding small vector Adobe PDF file:

In a non-transitive equivalence relation, ``A is equivalent to C'' does not follow from the two statements ``A is equivalent to B'' and ``B is equivalent to C''.]

The SVG file linked in the table above won't work in version 1.0 of Adobe SVG Viewer plugin (which claimed to be compatible with the eighth pre-release of the SVG standard on 3/3/0, but unfortunately ignored "Exchange SVG" syntax); update to a more recent version instead. If you encounter server MIME-type problems, save the SVG file to your local disk (with a name ending in ".svg"), and view it from there.

For other versions of the Shield of the Trinity diagram with Arabic-language captions (including an explanation of the difference between the Christian Trinity and the pseudo-Trinity which Muhammad denounces in the Qur'an), see the appropriate section of the Symbolic Truth site main page (or view this small PDF file).

Also, there is a page on the most accurate version of the name of Jesus in Arabic and other languages, and the Tengwar Arabic Mode writing system for the Arabic language.

The images below illustrate other historical versions of this diagram (for resizable vector versions of these, see the second and third pages of the same Adobe PDF file linked above). A shield-shaped version of the diagram on a red shield was considered to be the heraldic arms of God (or of the Trinity) in medieval England and France. For further details, now see the Wikipedia article on the Shield of the Trinity or Scutum Fidei.
